Not sure what is happening, but we only had 28 patients total today and I left an hour early- somebody was ahead of me on the list so she got to go earlier. I've already signed up for low census tomorrow as there are only 18 patients. Well, it can mean nothing. You can have a day that looks perfect on the schedule and it can go to hell in about 30 minutes flat.

They called a cardiac arrest in the women's bathroom off the lobby. It's our job to run codes on our floor so charge nurse grabbed the cart and ran with it- I couldn't because I was doing recovery. However, the woman recovered from her alleged cardiac arrest before the team arrived, so suspect it was a faint.

I have arranged the nurse who will admit FIL, the surgical tech who will prep him, and the waiting room volunteer who will fuss over the family. FTR, this volunteer drives me crazy. She's so SWEET. Praise Jesus! And Hallelujah! She's a constant Christian testimonial in action. She's been volunteering for years. I'm sure DH's family will love her. She makes me nuts.

Dinner tonight: chicken with thyme/lemon sauce, au gratin potatoes, and swiss chard with lemon and parmesan. Hopefully it'll be okay.

House remains reasonably respectable. If it burned down, I wouldn't be embarrassed to have the firefighters see it.

Crabmeat canneloni, this week: that was good. And I roasted a game hen. And last night it was steak, but I made a compound butter for it with cheese and garlic and chives from the herb patch. Tonight I was tired and took the leftover crabmeat and made crab melts. Pretty good, too, but it was suggested that parmesan mixed in would be good.

Went to Taste of Edmonds today. Came home exhausted and then Bunny called and they took Ribkicker with them to the Seattle Aquarium (fish! More fish! Fish star!)and DH invited them to stop by for dinner, so I wound up cleaning the house at 90 mph and then setting up for dinner. Lucky I did the cleaning because they had a friend with them.

Bought a toy for Ribkicker at the Taste: it's a combination squirt gun/bubble maker with flashing colored lights and when Ribkicker got it, he was FASCINATED. Wow! he said appreciatively, and then the white heat of his enthusiasm got ahead of him and he added, "whoa!" If any of you have quite young kids in your family, I can recommend any toy that shoots bubbles in combination with flashing lights.

Taste of Edmonds wasn't nearly as nice as I've seen it before, but it's been a few years since we went. They did have some fun things and I bought some 25 year old balsamic vinegar. And we got the toy, too. Not a total loss.

Ribkicker really started 2 and 3 word sentences now! :::happydance::: And it was fun to see the friend; he is married to Bunny's college roommate and is staying a few days with them while his wife is visiting her parents with their baby.

At least the house got clean, and I can collapse until Monday morning now.

Am enjoying True Blood. Have ordered the DVDs and a set of paperbacks to be delivered to Miss P, who is, I understand, having difficulty adjusting to the heat in Charlotte. Well, they moved there in August. Probably the hottest time of year. Toad has bought his first books for school and he is in shock, they cost 1k.

Have had several days off; do not return to work until Thursday. Struggling with barely being functional. All my joints ache and I suspect I have some arthritis. Incidentally, aspirin works much better for this aching than vicodin, which is a good thing, as one vicodin a night is all I get and all I need, so I can sleep with RLS. But the struggling isn't anything to do with the joints (although that doesn't help); it's to do with depression. I went off Prozac in June and the doctor told me to come back if I have problems; I'm going to call tomorrow and see when I can get in. I'm barely able to function; it's August; I'm suppose to be baking cookies and freezing them for Solstice.

DH's symptoms are returning. I think he's just going to have to break down and take meds on a schedule. Anyway he's miserable.

DH says he's not going to take the day off for his dad's surgery, since he will be there working anyway. He has selected an anesthesiologist, a perfusionist, a respiratory therapist, and a team of nurses. I asked him if he had discussed this with his mother. "I thought you divorced my parents," he answered. I said, "No, I divorced your family. That's why I asked YOU if I should be there; I would be there for you. But I am a sweet and kind person and realize that the person who should be consulted about your presence is your mother. Would she find it supportive for you to be there?" And he said, "I've done everything I can, and I don't think it will be helpful to sit in a waiting room with her." And I said, "It would be helpful to me if I were sitting there waiting to hear about you having surgery, if the kids were with me. And what if you're tied up with a patient who's crumping and your dad has a problem? What would they do on the unit?" And he said, "They'd manage without me." And I said: "I know you. You'd be torn to shreds, if your dad needed you and a patient did too. It's not fair on the unit, if you have to drop everything and run to your father. And it's not fair on your mother, to have you gone. She will want you there. At least ask her." Then, as a wise wife, I dropped the subject, because I am right and we both know it.

Anyway. House is a pit from hell again- I meant to clean, but haven't been able to get it together enough to do so. I probably ought to pull out my Kim and Aggie dvds and watch them for a while.

Crashie is healing- I'm washing his head every couple of days now, and putting on the cortisone spray. It's vastly improved, but still itches- he comes up and rubs his head against my leg. Oh, I let him out tonight when DH got home from work- I tell the dogs, "Papa's home" and they head to the front door- I stood out there watching them and noticed a car driving by, in our quiet neighborhood, and it did a u-turn and came back and u-turned again and then the driver rolled down her window and called to us, "I just wanted to check out your big boy!" which made us laugh. If she had stopped, Crashie would have gone out and introduced himself and been friends.

All the wisteria is now climbing over the top of the arbor. We probably have another six weeks of growing here. I'm pleased. We will wind up with a shady patio for evenings.

Found a book at the local junque shoppe on the burning of Washington DC in 1814- looks good. My To Be Read pile never shrinks, it only grows.

Did the Anacortes arts festival- a huge street fair. DH went Friday while I was working because he's working this weekend and couldn't go with me. He brought back salsas and sauces; I found my favorite spice company and bought cabernet salt, lemon sugar, lime sugar, margarita rimmer... I think that was it. Oh, and a chocolate/chili rub for meat.

Went into used book store and spotted a secondhand Williams-Sonoma dessert book. I don't do desserts much, but am always willing to expand repertoire.

Miss P says they're wondering how their dog, Nala, managed to change the channels on the TV while they were out. Plus, she switched it to Fox news, missing Shark Week on Discovery. Are they raising that dog to be a republican?????

Father-in-law will be having heart surgery in 2 weeks' time. DH says not to worry about getting day off since working means we'll be right there anyway.

Unable to sleep much last night; work dragged for me as it was extremely busy and I was barely functional. However, pleased that a couple of coworkers asked me to do IVs for them as, they said, "you're so good at them." Nice to have the skill returning.

Today was DH's birthday and his coworkers threw him a party which I fully intended to attend; I came home and laid down for a nap so I'd be awake for it. DH tried to wake me before he left but he says I kind of grunted at him and rolled over, so he went without me.
One kind friend gifted him with a bottle of Scottish single-malt.

Crashie slowly improving, but I did see the poor baby lying on the patio with his head back, trying to rub the top of his head on the concrete. Itchy, I guess. Poor precious baby.

Saturday going to Anacortes arts fair with cousin; Sunday have proposed a trip to Powell's with Bunny, but have not heard back from her. Suspect she already has plans.

It's cooled down, but it's so muggy here. At least it's cool in the mornings which is nice and indicates the approach of Fall.

We did groceries this weekend, ran into a familiar-looking person at the meat counter. She recognized DH and exclaimed, and he said, "I'm sorry, drawing a blank here." And she introduced herself as someone who'd spent a day with DH when she was a student nurse (this happens often. The idea is to give the nurses an understanding of respiratory issues.) Anyway, she said, "I learned so much! Do you know how much he knows?"- addressed to me. "Yes," I answered. She raved for a couple of minutes about what a great day that was and how much she learned and that she'd even thought about dumping nursing and going with RT but eventually decided that she could be an RN with an appreciation of how much RT has to offer.

DH was pleased about it, and so was I. Yes, he does have a lot of knowledge and he's good about explaining things.

Incidentally, DH attempted to delete one show from the DVR this weekend, and erased every damn thing on it. :::slightly enraged::: But I told him: the NEXT time he wants to delete something, I'll be happy to show him how.

First time I've EVER been able to best him with electronics. A minor triumph, but my own.

DH stayed home today and I drove to Bunny's to help her make jam. Ribkicker was napping when I got there- he woke up a couple of hours later and I went to pick him up, with Bunny a few paces behind me because we both knew if he saw Mama he'd want HER to pick him up. Anyway, he lifted his head, with his tousled platinum curls and flushed cheeks, looked at me, and held out his arms for me. I picked him up and said, "Gammie loves you," and he asked hopefully, "Bappa?" ("Grampa?") Had fun watching him play in wading pool while Bunny made jam with friends. They bought him a slide for $5 at a yard sale, and I asked him if he could show Gammie how he plays on the slide, please? And he went over and walked up the plastic steps, and walked down the plastic slide. :::amused:::

DH grouchy for no known reason when I got home. Grilled shrimp for dinner- I could taste the lime I marinated them in, but DH couldn't. Taco salad tomorrow.

Shampooed Crashie before I left today. He is not enjoying that, but when I got home, his head was fully dry so I sprayed on the steroid and rubbed it in.

True Blood: Okay, that final scene was a leetle too graphic for me.

Not sure what happened, but everything we've recorded on the DVR has vanished. :::stunned::: How annoying.

Dinner: DH marinated a pork tenderloin in olive oil with garlic, lemon and rosemary and broiled it- also broiled some plums to go with- and I made a pasta-broccoli salad.

Am going up to visit daughter tomorrow and help make jam; am going to suggest taco salad for dinner tomorrow. Weather moderated slightly but still hot.

Swelling over Crashie's face has decreased. I shampooed him again today and once it was dry, got steroid spray onto what I could. He is obviously feeling better.

Went into work, admitted one patient, charge asked me if I were staying or not as if I chose to stay, she would call off another RN. I left. Went to Employee Health and the nurse-practitioner there, after being reassured that I am not the victim of spousal abuse, wrote me a scrip for pain pills.

Took two when I got home, and rode with DH and Crashie to vet. Crashie would not allow anyone to shave his forehead, and we would not allow them to sedate or anesthetize him for this. If this becomes necessary, we will contact breeders' vet, who works with mastiffs frequently, as mastiffs have a higher-than-ordinary risk of dying with anesthesia. Poor Crashie also had a cortisone shot, an antibiotic shot, an ear swabbing, and a peppermint candy. We have antibiotics, steroids, eardrops, and topical spray for him. Exhausted, he came home, drank just under a gallon of water, and fell asleep in front of the fan.

Ballot arrived today- one county council position (I voted nonRepublican) and one city council position with three candidates. One candidate's statement incoherent and badly punctuated, one candidate set up a website with only his voter's pamphlet statement on it, and managed to find some information online as well. Voted for the guy who drove elderly man home from grocery store and put up his sick neighbor's Christmas lights. He seems to have appropriate priorities.

Received sympathy card from Mom's bank, as sister involved in shutting down accounts.
